Hide and Seek

“Children who have been relentlessly harmed become preoccupied with survival. They try their best to preserve dignity, defending themselves against threats which leave them exposed. The greatest wish is to find somewhere to hide. These hiding places can be concrete spaces, or spaces in the mind. The child turns into an illusionist, disappearing, hiding bad memories and maybe making up good ones to keep hope alive. Freud learnt so much from his patients about the defences needed to keep the self integrated, so it's fitting that the children of Kids Company should hide their thoughts, feelings and images within the fabric of his museum. Please come and seek, and maybe find, these poignant treasures.

The essence of healing is a compassionate companionship, the moment when the thought of one matches the comprehension of another. Ultimately, it's about helping people be less alone, less discarded and less devastated. Those who hide always hope that someone kind will someday find them, and be happy. The children of Kids Company, through their art, are coming to find you.”
